δέρμα (dérma) -γραφία (-graphía) - Skin Drawing

Dermography represents an exploration of the symbiotic relationship between drawing and the ritualistic nature of tattooing. This study aims to delve into the profound significance of tattoos as a transformative rite of passage, where the skin serves as both the vessel and origin of a distinctive pattern.

The allure of tattoos lies in their capacity to carry symbolic patterns, transcending cultural boundaries and reflecting an enduring fascination with the practice throughout history. The weight that tattoos bear on an individual is intriguing, as the process itself becomes a meaningful shift and a transformative experience.

Central to Dermography is the acknowledgment and activation of an intrinsic, fractal pattern that spontaneously emerges. The visible marks and scars on the skin surface serve as indexical traces of one's life journey, and through the medium of tattooing, they are eternally imprinted, becoming the anchor around which personal narratives are made tangible.

The resulting pattern is inherently unique, crafted exclusively for the individual. It encapsulates their personal story, residing within their body as a latent force, eagerly awaiting its manifestation upon the skin's surface.

Dermography is an concept that emerged from my latest rubber latex work displayed in a site-specific installation at St Nicholas Chapel and in a collective showcase at Penwith Gallery in St Ives in 2023. Above all, it serves as a bridge between my two artistic practices, elevating tattooing to a performative event where the individual's experience takes centre stage.

Each individual contributes to a much larger pattern, and I am eager to meet you and hear your unique story, as it will manifest in the traced lines of the tattoo. These lines will bear personal meaning, capturing the essence of your narrative.

My goal now is to grow the Dermography portfolio, but to do so, I need individuals who are willing to participate, embracing new and alternative creative processes.

During a day session, meticulous scrutiny of the intended tattoo area takes place, paying close attention to muscle structure to enhance the flow of lines and incorporate the skin's marks and scars. Then there is the mapping (a temporary drawing), engaging in a conversation between you and me to determine areas where emphasis is desired. The drawing evolves as we progress until you are satisfied and ready to proceed with the tattooing process.

Given the excitement surrounding this new venture, I am offering a good price for half or full day sessions, providing an opportunity not only to share your story but also to enjoy a day of self-care, as a dear friend of mine aptly pointed out.

“Her knowledge and fascination of the body, natural world, history, society and psychology really give the feeling you are being worked with and not just on by someone exceptional in their chosen profession and who exudes with a quiet brilliance the skill to manifest this mental melee of knowledge into a unique piece of artwork that will not just change the way your body looks but potentially change how you see yourself and the world you live in if you are willing to embrace the profundity imbued in its history and presence with you.”

Behind the scenes of “The Unsteady Now”, short film by Bull & Wolf, showcasing Dreysa collective’s recent exhibition. It was made possible by Cultivator Cornwall as part of the Graduate Start-Up programme.

Thanks to the support of Cultivator Cornwall funding, I had the privilege of collaborating with the Dreysa collective and being featured in a short film created by Bull and Wolf. This captivating film showcases footage from our latest exhibition, 'The Unsteady Now,' as well as highlights my latest site-specific installation at St Nicholas Chapel and Penwith Gallery in St Ives. It not only captures the essence of our collective journey but also provides glimpses into the intricate process of Dermography.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the individuals who have crossed paths with us, attended our exhibitions, and provided unwavering support throughout the 10-month funding period. Your presence and encouragement have been invaluable in shaping our artistic endeavors.

This film holds immense significance as it represents the first time my various artistic practices have seamlessly merged. It serves as a testament to the transformative power of Dermography, where academic-driven Fine Art and the ritualistic nature of tattooing intertwine harmoniously. The film not only delves into the intrinsic patterns that emerge but also showcases the mesmerizing process of Dermography itself, bringing to life the intimate connection between the artist and the skin.
